This, is Trench Foot.
Trench Foot is what happens when your feet are immersed in water for such a long period of time that it begins to rot. Soldiers who fought during WWI would often get Trench Foot when it rained and the trenches filled with water. They didn't have a way to treat Trench Foot, so what they did is they would cut off your foot, then cauterize the stump of your leg and ship you home.
Trench Foot was a huge fear during WWI. Imagine you live in the year 1914. You get Trench Foot and they have to cut your foot off. How are you supposed to walk? You can't. This was a scary thing in 1914 because they didn't have prosthetic limbs that would allow you to walk again, meaning you were stuck in your house and could not get a job.
Trench Foot was not the only thing you could get. You could also get Trench Mouth. This is even worse because they can't cut your mouth off, so there isn't much they can do about it. You would be sent home, then probably to a hospital where you would then die.
